Provincial Reciprocity Attainment Program (PRAP)

About The Program

This program is designed to assist paramedics who are actively registered in other provinces but do not meet the registration requirements of Emergency Health Services Nova Scotia (EHSNS). To be eligible to attend this program, an individual first needs to apply to EHSNS for registration in Nova Scotia. The curriculum is based on what the individual applicant has not obtained from his/her original province of registration/certification.

The amount of time required for this program depends upon the individual student and their learning requirements and will entail clinical placement time.

Program Details

The Provincial Reciprocity Attainment Program is designed to meet the needs of the paramedic for:

  • re-registration of level to meet provincial requirements
  • familiarization with provincial protocols, procedures and processes
  • clinical assurance program with EMC/EHS to ensure quality performance from field medics
  • Graduates will receive a certificate of completion and a review booklet with a breakdown of completed areas.

The program itself involves didactic, skill, and clinical review, and encompasses all recognized levels of paramedicine.

Outline (PCP) - Total Hours:  116

  • Didactic: 36 hours
  • Skill Lab: 18 hours
  • Clinical:
    • Ambulance (20 pt contacts): 42 hours
    • Adult ER: 12 hours
    • Ped. ER: 12 hours (If available)

The didactic review consists of an intense review of current skill levels, practices and guidelines with respect to provincial protocols to ensure a good working knowledge at each designated level.

The skills lab encompasses a review of all necessary skills for each level and requires a mastered grade to continue. Skills would include:

  • Patient assessment
  • Defibrillation
  • Oxygen saturation
  • Glucometer
  • Spinal immobilization
  • Splinting
  • Bandaging
  • Drug administration (level dependant)
  • Intravenous procedures (level dependant)

The clinical portion should allow ample opportunity to achieve the 20 patient goal, in addition to allowing the preceptor ample time to evaluate the student.

Cost $450.00 per student (May vary depending on skill level)
