History

The Founding of a New School

Nova Scotia’s emergency medical system is one of the most advanced in Canada, and the programs at the Maritime School of Paramedicine have been developed to meet the standards of Emergency Health Services Nova Scotia.

Following the announced closure in 2000 of the P1 and P3 Programs at the QEII Health Sciences Centre in Halifax, St. John Ambulance -- Nova Scotia/PEI realized that the need for paramedicine education in Nova Scotia was no longer being met. Launching the Maritime School of Paramedicine, based in metro Halifax, was a logical fit for St. John Ambulance as an organization dedicated to strengthening the early links of emergency medical services (and the continuum of care) in our communities.

Since September 2001, the Maritime School of Paramedicine, now Nova Scotia’s only English language program in Primary Care Paramedicine, delivers an education with uncompromising standards of excellence that prepare graduates for the demands of a career in paramedicine. The programs provide a solid theoretical and practical education covering all of the applied arts and sciences, placing a strong emphasis on self-directed learning and critical thinking.

The Maritime School of Paramedicine is registered with the Private Colleges Association of Nova Scotia and complies with the principles and legislation of the Private Carreer College Act. Furthermore, the Canadian Medical Association is scheduled to evaluate our programs in June 2005. Therefore, students are eligible to apply for student assistance through the Nova Scotia Student Loans (NSSL) and/or the Canada Student Loans Programs (CSL). Students may also contact their local bank to discuss possible student funding programs (e.g., low-interest student line of credit).
